Default Developer Q&A: Episode VIII

We're changing the entry requirements slightly for Developer Q&A: Episode VIII. You no longer have to specify which developer or department to submit your question. We will find the right person for you!

Post a question for a specific dev or department here in this thread and I will look into getting it answered in this developer Q&A! If it doesn't get asked, not to worry -- It may be too early for them to answer -- and there will be plenty more opportunities in the series to come.

I've presented two of my own formatted examples below. Following their guidelines will encourage entrance for your question.

One question per episode, please. If your question gets picked up, it may be edited for length and content. The Episode VIII deadline is Friday evening, March 28 -- just about a week!

Will it be possible to change sides even temporarily such as happens on the show? Examples from the show: O'Niell joining Maybourne's N.I.D. operation to catch the rogue N.I.D. thieves or Tea'lc getting brainwashed by Apophis.

Will it be possible to play both the Evil Side and the Good Side on the same server or will you be forced to play on separate servers depending on your alignment choice? I.e., if you have an Asgardian character, can you also have a Go'uld character on the same server?

Question: Combat - You've explained about cover, tactics, etc. But how will military gear and weaponry such as flack jackets, body armor (like Interceptor, for example), P90s, and M249 SAWs contribute to the idea of modern tactical combat as far as the protection that the modern military gear (not the armor in-game) will provide and the effect that modern weaponry will have on light-armored to heavy armored Jaffa, Goa'uld, and Op-Core?

So will the commands be simple such as in WoW where the commands are simply attack, stay and follow with different aggressive stances? or will pets constantly remain side by side with its/their controller, or will they be able to try to flank the opposing mob. I was wondering in the future will there be any quest that involve time travel because of something that goes wrong with the gate? I think that would be very interesting amd fun.

Question: Will there be irises or shields on certain gates? For example, if you are a good human, and you're trying to get back to Earth, will you have to enter a GDO code, or risk being smushed on the iris? Will this be used as a way of keeping enemy players from getting to a race's main world (example: using an iris to keep Goa'uld players from swagering aroung the SGC)?

Question (to Wyrd): In combat after you target someone and acquire a lock on them what circumstances and factors will cause that lock to release and force you to have to re-establish your lock on your previous target?

Question: Will pvp styles always be the same or will you introduce new ways of pvp along the way? Example: Guild Wars introduced Hero Battles and frequently has small pvp events that coincide with other events.

How will weapons be balanced amongst each other? (ex. Staff weapons being very powerful but completely inaccurate and MP5s being extremely accurate but less powerful.)

I like this idea, since it can put a real curve in a quest, plot line, event, etc. but what would you be limited too? Say you began a PvP war, Good v. Evil one year after the release of Worlds and all Asgard worlds were obliterated... Yet this conflicted with a future that you experience in a mission/quest. What type of conflicts would this create for the whole game?

I'm just saying it's a very touchy topic, in a (hopefully) long-lived game like this one, it needs addressing. Would players be able to shape the future for other players, and destroy the balance of fairness in creating new adventures? Removing chances for future starting players to make their way through, just like the first players did, would give the game so much more depth and reality, but perhaps at the cost of Good v. Evil balancing out and the story line intended for the game. Think about it for awhile:

-How much power will you really give us in the long run, to control the fate of the universe??
-Would players work with developers in the game on actual developments, or would we just sit here barking on the forums while you did something with the story that we didn't want to happen.

No criticism here, I've loved everything Stargate for three years now, but i feel I've got to be the pain in the a$$ to ask it.

Question: I use short names for many of my characters. Will there be a minimal character limit on character names, and if so what is the current thinking on the limiting of character name lengths, both minimum and maximum, and the use of existing canon names?

Will group dynamics be a huge roll like they are in other games for instance/raids? (Tank Healer Dps Dps Dps) Or could you theoretically Run an instance with all the same type of Character class if you had to or was the only thing available to you?


(I honestly cannot remember if this has been asked before)

Question: Will there be restrictions on names that disrupt the feel of the game? Or will people on all servers be able to pick silly names or emulate the names of characters from the Stargate universe (or any other universe. Gods help me if I see a Jaffa named Legolaz)?
